Pushing the Envelope with Mail Art
I have a slightly disgruntled mailman. I don’t think it’s really related to him working for the postal service, I just think he’s kind of a grumpy fellow. That’s okay, we appreciate him and accept him and his overzealous efforts to literally fit 15 pound deliveries into a 10 pound mailbox.
He’s an overachiever.
So when I got the wild idea that I would do some unconventional addressing of envelopes, I knew I was toying with the cost of both international and domestic postage. I enjoyed decorating these letters so much, and the idea of the smiles my novice efforts might bring to the recipients made me so happy. All the same, I am prepared for the heart-breaking moment that these come back marred with the dreaded “return to sender” stamp. Hold me.
Have artsy courage. NOBODY PUTS BABY IN A CORNER!
It’s good practice. I’ll keep trying.
Special note to those who identify as art-inept! TRY. Give it a shot with some light pencil lines, and inking over them. Use lines of washi tape to dress up a simple envelope. I’d love to see what you come up with!
